Brown Mountain Dam

The weather has finally decided to warm up. That's nice, but the raised temperatures also feel like a slap in the face to those working hard on a bike. A nice ride to help with the transition, is the relatively flat and slightly technical Arroyo Secco trail from JPL to the Brown Mountain Dam. It's a beautiful ride amongst the trees and creeks that run mostly parallel to the main path.

Mountain bikes and cyclocross bikes are your best choice. There are a few hike-a-bike sections, but not as many as earlier on in the year when there were too many stream crossings.

While having a merry time, riding over rocks and shallow creek-beds, be cautious. Watch out for rattle snakes and Poison Oak. 

At the end of your destination, after you pass the Gould Mesa Campground and the Paul Little Campground, you will be rewarded by the vision of the Brown Mountain Dam!

Don't hesitate. Take a moment to take your shoes off to cool off your feet before the fast and fun descent back to JPL.

As always, with riding, be safe, bring lots of water, always wear a helmet, and please be courteous to other trail users. We, cyclists, always desire a good reputation!

SEEK AND ENJOY: The Montrose Mash, A Gravel Grinder in the Heart of Montrose

Montrose Bike Shop is excited to participate in the 2015 Specialized regional Seek series! Please join us for a fun, no drop ride, as we explore the back roads, gravel, sand and single-track of Montrose, La Canada, and Altadena, with a SAG stop at the long-standing bike shop. The ride is free, but you do need to rsvp (see: Tickets Available link just above). Lunch and an after ride poolside party is included. Bring your towels and swim suits if you want to go for a post-ride dip in the pool. The ride starts in La Canada. There's lots of street parking. You'll get more details after registration. Meet at 8:45 RTR 9am. 

Please note that this ride is Free and is open to riders of all ability levels. A bike like the Diverge would be ideal but your cyclocross bike, touring bike, mountain bike or road bike (with some skill) will get the job done! This is a NO DROP ride.

Join us and learn to Ride Like a Ninja. You’ll soon conquer your fears on the drops and switchbacks, unlock free speed in the corners and boogie up any climb the trail throws at you. We’ll teach you how to brake effectively, how to perfect your footwork and demonstrate just how much your body position can affect your ride.

Following your clinic, you will see an immediate improvement in your riding and a boost in confidence. You’ll understand how changes in your body position, footwork and where you are looking affect the way your bike behaves.  You’ll be able to tackle steeper terrain, corner with control and negotiate trail obstacles with ease.  The clinic will be taught by Coach Richard La China, IMBA and USA Cycling certified!

Montrose Bike Shop Ride

Keeping up with tradition, we had another fun shop ride this past weekend. Even though it was Mother's Day, fourteen mountain bikers showed up to ride from the shop, on Honolulu, up Hospital Hill, to Hampstead, to our back yard playground: Cherry Canyon. This little shop ride has something for everyone. Depending on who shows up, we oftentimes split up in two groups: The more experienced and the less experienced riders. 

The first group hits the single tracks, enjoying mixed terrain, switchbacks, gnarly descends, steep uphills, rock gardens…you name it. The less experienced group gains experience by building strength by climbing wide fire roads as well as a couple not-too-technical single tracks, gaining experience in a stress free environment. 

Get ready for your week early on Sunday, and then grab your bike and come have one last MTB ride around Cherry Canyon with Montrose Bike Shop!
